In the Hall of the Mountain King — melody and bass

Pair Grieg’s sneaky 16-bar troll theme with a pulsing, ominous bass line for a spooky two-hand performance.

Try it at the keyboard

  1. Keep the left-hand A and E minims crisp and steady like a drumbeat.
  2. Practise bars 2, 6 and 14 slowly so the right-hand D♯ and B♭ land cleanly on the left-hand beats.
  3. Start pianissimo (very quiet) and grow louder toward the final A minor cadence in bar 16.
