Frequently asked questions
What is Melody Trainer?
A free melodic dictation tool. Listen to a short piano melody and work out its pitches. The first note is given, and question marks stand for the notes you need to find—not rests.
How do I enter or change a note?
Press Play to hear the melody. Select a question mark or note directly on the staff, then try piano keys. Each key sounds and replaces your guess in that selected position. Select the next position yourself. Erase clears the selected guess; the given first note cannot change.
What does Done check?
Done checks the exact piano pitches, including the octave, when every note is filled in. Checkmarks show matching notes and crosses show notes to change. Your guesses stay visible so you can correct them without losing your work. Rhythm and speed are not graded.
Which melodies and piano sounds are used?
There are 24 levels in six groups: two notes, stepwise melodies, repeats and steps, steps and skips, larger jumps and longer melodies. The original phrases use the white keys from middle C to C5, with mixed directions rather than labels that reveal the answer. The piano spans three octaves, C3 to C6, so you can explore below and above the melody range. Scroll sideways for more keys on smaller screens. Playback and piano keys use the shared Salamander sampled grand piano. An internet connection is needed to load the samples.
Can I listen more than once?
Yes. Play repeats the target melody without changing your guesses. Once every position is filled, Hear my answer plays your whole answer. Select the given first note to hear it on its own. Stop or Escape stops the sound.
Do I need an account, microphone or piano?
No. Use the on-screen piano with a mouse, touchscreen or keyboard focus. There is no timer. Completed-level marks last for this page session and are not saved or synced.
